A surface marker buoy, SMB, dive float or simply a blob is a buoy used by scuba divers, at the end of a line from the diver, intended to indicate the diver's position to people at the surface while the diver is underwater.
The Blob is a fairly conspicuous, mound-shaped knoll that is almost completely snow-covered, standing midway between Thurston Glacier and Armour Inlet on the north coast of Siple Island.
The blob was the name given to a large black algal bloom that was first spotted floating in the Chukchi Sea between the Alaskan cities of Wainwright and Utqiaġvik in July 2009.
